MOZART REQUIEM
plus World Premiere of Sacris Solemniis, a newly commissioned work by Ola Gjeilo!
This double-bill concert combined a world premiere of Sacris Solemniis from much loved contemporary choral composer Ola Gjeilo, and one of the most popular classical works of all time - the profoundly moving, enigmatic Requiem by Mozart.
Gjeilo transports the shiveringly beautiful spirit of his native Norway's landscape into his music. He’s known for his cinematic, evocative, radiant vocal textures and richly-colored, entrancing harmonies. It was a phenomenal coup for Masterworks Chorale to present this brand-new commission.
Almost 200 years before Gjeilo was born, Mozart lay on his death bed, attempting to finish this complex, emotional masterpiece before his own death overtook him. His final moments are reflected through this masterpiece of drama, intensity and depth. It remains one of the most powerful, enduring pieces of music ever composed.
