FAURÉ REQUIEM

plus works by Franz Schubert and Kirke Mechem

Our season-opening was a performance of the intimate Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. Of this, his most famous work, Fauré wrote: “My Requiem has a sweet nature, like me!” And, indeed, it is surely the most gentle and serene of the Requiems. Its poise, apparent simplicity, balanced structure, and unruffled beauty have led many to call it Hellenic, comparing it to the art of classical Greece. Rounding out this program are choral works by Franz Schubert (Ständchen, Nachthelle) and Kirke Mechem (Island in Space), as well as songs for soloists by Schubert and Fauré.

Originally performed Saturday, November 10, 2018, and Sunday, November 11, 2018, at Congregational Church of San Mateo.
